Agra is one of the great cities of South Asia. For most of the 16th and 17th centuries it was the seat of Mughal power, and the architectural ambition of those decades, in marble, sandstone, gardens, and water, still defines its skyline.

The Taj Mahal is, of course, the headline. Built by Shah Jahan in memory of Mumtaz Mahal between 1631 and 1648, it remains one of the most studied and most photographed buildings in the world. But Agra is much more than the Taj. Agra Fort is a vast Mughal stronghold, Itimad-ud-Daulah is a jewel-box prototype for the Taj, and Fatehpur Sikri, an hour away, is Akbar's abandoned imperial city.

What to See in Agra

A well-planned Agra visit moves between landmark monuments and a quieter exploration of Mughal craft and food.

• Taj Mahal: ideally at sunrise, with cool light, soft mist, and far fewer crowds. The full experience includes the chowk, the gardens, the riverside terrace, and the calligraphy of the main chamber.
• Agra Fort: the Mughal stronghold, with audience halls, marble pavilions, and the room where Shah Jahan lived under house arrest looking out at the Taj.
• Itimad-ud-Daulah: known as the Baby Taj, an exquisite tomb often considered the prototype for the Taj Mahal.
• Mehtab Bagh: a Mughal char bagh garden across the Yamuna, with the most photogenic late-afternoon view of the Taj from the river side.
• Fatehpur Sikri: Akbar's abandoned imperial capital, an hour from Agra, an extraordinary essay in red sandstone.
• Marble inlay and zardozi workshops: a craft Agra has practiced since the Mughal era, still alive in traditional family workshops.

For travellers with extra time we add a Yamuna riverside walk in the early morning before the Taj opens, or a private cooking session in the old city.

Best Time to Visit Agra

Agra is best visited from October through March. April to June is hot, and the monsoon brings short showers from July to September.
